What Does an Alternator Do?

The alternator supplies that power by converting mechanical energy to electrical energy while your engine is running. A rubber drive belt connects the alternator to the engine's crank pulley. As the engine rotates, the belt turns a rotor that's located in the stator. The rotor has an electric current running through it, which creates a magnetic field. That magnetic field produces an AC electric current in the stator, which winds the alternator. Diodes convert that current into the DC current your systems rely upon.

Signs of a Failing Alternator

Even the best alternator can eventually go bad, and you won't always have much advance warning that it's happening. Indications include:

• Flickering or dimmed headlights or interior lights
• A dead battery
• Issues with your power windows or sound system
• You notice a whining noise coming from the engine
